Scottsdale neighborhood-center plan resurfaces

A developer who wants to build a gas station and stores northwest of Pima Road and Dynamite Boulevard is bringing back his plan to the city.

R.L. Miller of Scottsdale and Dynamite Properties LLC are seeking a rezoning and use permit for Miller's 10-acre site to allow construction of a neighborhood commercial center that could include a general store, restaurant, garden shop and hardware store.

Some area residents have opposed the project, known as the Outpost at Pima and Dynamite, since it surfaced two years ago.

"They do not believe commercial development is appropriate on that site," said Linda Whitehead, a Coalition of Pinnacle Peak member.

The property is zoned for large residential lots. It is flanked by two churches, a horse ranch and state trust land to the east and south targeted for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Power-line towers cut across the intersection.

Zoning attorney Paul Gilbert said residential development is not feasible because of the power lines. The Outpost would shorten the trip for residents to buy groceries and gasoline, he said.
