Law guards renters amid foreclosure

Question: My landlord says her house is going into foreclosure and I have to vacate immediately. Can she make me leave so quickly?

- Mel Pettway Phoenix

Answer: Under federal law, tenants of foreclosed houses can stay for the remainder of their lease term or 90 days; whichever is LONGER, or, if the new buyer is moving into the home, the tenant must be given 90 days to vacate. If you feel your rights are being violated, contact the Phoenix landlord-tenant office. They provide free service to tenants statewide. You can call them at 602-262-7210, but for faster service you can walk into their office at 200 W. Washington, Fourth floor, in downtown Phoenix. The agency takes walk-in tenants ahead of phone callers. This agency can advise you of your rights and may contact the landlord if they feel he/she is violating federal law.
