Group proposes to build beach club in Entertainment District

Triyar Entertainment has submitted a request to Scottsdale to open a high-end beach club on the northeastern corner of Stetson Drive and Wells Fargo Avenue in the Entertainment District.

Triyar purchased the nearly 2-acre parcel several years ago and has been working on its plans for redevelopment in the latest phase of its makeover of the area.

The Development Review Board application is for approval of the site plan, landscape plan and building elevations. That begins the city approval process, said Kim Chafin, senior city planner.

Triyar plans to invest around $6 million to build the one-story complex, which will include a resort-style pool, four bar areas, private cabanas, a floating stage overlooking the pool, a large LED video screen, locker areas with showers, a full restaurant, a poolside taco bar and clubhouse area with video games, billiards, shuffleboard and televisions.

Shawn Yari, Triyar's owner, wouldn't comment on the submittal.

The proposed club is the latest in an emerging trend in the area of beach clubs that draw crowds to large pool parties.

Bill Crawford, president of the Association to Preserve Downtown Scottsdale's Quality of Life, said the city shouldn't consider this project until it has addressed the noise and parking problems already prevalent in the Entertainment District. Crawford's group has organized to demand more city enforcement of noise, litter and parking problems generated from bar patrons.

"Why would we want to bring in another 900-pound gorilla on top of the other problems that we have that have not been solved yet?" he said.

According to the request, the beach club will bring "new life and visual vitality to the area and complement the evolving use from vacant office to restaurant and club."

The Development Review Board will review and consider approving the site plan, landscape plan and building elevations, Chafin said. The Planning Commission and City Council will consider bar-use and live-entertainment use permits, she said.

The beach club would include at least 60 parking spaces, Yari said when he announced the project in April.

The beach club should be ready to open in summer 2012, he said.

"Timing (on the city-approval process) will depend on the developer, as the only application they have submitted thus far is the Development Review Board application," Chafin said.
